This webinar will address specific steps your organization can take to implement SOGIE affirming practices in an ongoing manner. It will focus on preparing staff, as well as the children and youth you serve, whether in a big city or in a rural area. This presentation will also speak to the impact of COVID19 on LGBTQ+ & GE youth. Additionally, discussions will tackle racial inequity LGBTQ+ & GE children and youth are facing in child welfare systems.

Participants will learn:

a.            How racism and anti-gay/transgender bias are barriers to permanency in the child welfare systems.

b.            To incorporate SOGIE affirming practices throughout their organizations.

c.             The impact of COVID19 on LGBTQ+& GE youth.

d.            Learn resources to answer questions about medical treatment for transgender youths.

e.            The importance of Permanency &supporting families who do not affirm their children.

Vida Khavar is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with 25+years’ experience in child welfare. She has assisted a multitude of organizations in developing programs that serve children and families, and her expertise lies in permanency, out-of-home care, and the well-being of LGBTQ+ children and youth.  Vida was a consultant for the federal project: RISE, which aimed at improving the lives of LGBTQ youth in foster care in Los Angeles County. She was one of RISE’s developer and later served as RISE’s Master Coach and Fidelity Reviewer. She is currently the Project Director for get REAL California through Family Builders based in Oakland, CA. She collaborates with and guides the California Department of Social Services in developing and implementing new affirming policies and practices for LGBTQ+ children in foster care. Vida also provides her clinical expertise, training, and coaching for Family Builders’ Youth Acceptance Project to several jurisdictions throughout the country.
