ACEs Aware Provider Training

This training series for primary care, acute care, and behavioral health providers focuses on “Advancing Trauma-Informed Communities” and improving knowledge and capacity for utilizing community resources in the referral process. The goals of these trainings are to: a) increase provider insight into ACEs prevalence, b) develop screening capacity, c) explore tools to assess your local communities who experience ACEs, and d) identify strategies to facilitate a warm handoff by utilizing community resources for referral. Trainers will share considerations for integrating a service algorithm that clarifies which ACE(s) trigger particular service referrals. The training will also explore evidence-informed, non-clinical workflows; policy recommendations at the local and state levels; strategies for formalizing and sustaining partnerships with community-based organizations; and facilitating data sharing.

Learning Objectives:

Participants will learn how to:

1. Define Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), their prevalence, and name three impacts on health, including underlying biological mechanisms.

2. Identify two methods to introduce and integrate ACEs screening into clinical care and identify other trainings and resources available.

3. Describe two approaches to assess your local communities who experience ACEs.

4. Apply at least three strategies to facilitate a warm handoff by utilizing community resources for referral.

Professional Credits:

Course meets the qualifications for 3 hours of continuing education credit for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. Catalyst Center is approved by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists to sponsor continuing education for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs. Catalyst Center maintains responsibility for this program/course and its content.

Supplemental Training CME credits (3 CMEs for 3 hours of training) will be offered for physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners.  Additionally, this activity has been submitted to the California Board of Nursing for approval to award contact hours (3 CMEs for 3 hours of training).

All trainings are from 10am-1:30pm, with a 30-minute lunch break.

Adrienne Ballew Elder holds a Master in public health with specific training as a Certified Health Education Specialist, a National Bridges Out of Poverty Trainer, and a Certified Getting Ahead Program Facilitator. Adrienne is a co-author of Getting Ahead ACEs and PACEs Supplement: Addressing Trauma Through Building Trust and Resilience. She is a Core Team member of the National Trauma Campaign and on the Speakers and Trainers Bureau of the ACEs Connections Network.

Amarette Ficco has been with On The Move since 2013 promoting wellness and involving others to gain knowledge, skill, and expertise in understanding, recognizing, and responding to trauma while developing leadership skills. As the Health and Wellness Program Director, she is passionate about supporting youth, staff, organizations, and communities in building resilience. Amarette has participated in extensive training and earned numerous certificates in Trauma-Informed Care practices, and services. She is in the process of completing her Bachelor of Science in Psychology and is pursuing a Master in public health.

Bernice Rosas Belmonte has dedicated her time and efforts in working for the common good. She has a background working in immigration law, the non-profit sector, and campaigns. Her passions center around her values of human rights, equity, and social justice. She joined the Catalyst Center team in July of 2020 as Project Coordinator and continues her passion of amplifying the voices of those who are working with children and families. A graduate from the University of California, Riverside with a Bachelor of Arts in political science and the University of San Francisco with a Master in Public Affairs, she strives to be the bridge between policy and the community to ensure everyone has an equal and equitable opportunity at a healthy, wholesome life.

Dretona T. Maddox, RN, PHN, LCSW, is motivated by hardship. She is a suicide loss survivor and endured homelessness as a teen. She overcame adversity, going on to earn her Bachelor of Science in nursing from the University of Phoenix and her Master of Social Work from the University of Southern California. Maddox’s challenges were the catalyst for her life’s work. She is dedicated to trailblazing as an in-demand public speaker, a Teen Parent Advocate™, and the founding executive director of Purposely Chosen, Inc., a non-profit organization that provides support and advocacy services to pregnant/parenting teens in foster care. This organization includes two maternity homes in Southern California. Working for over 25 years as both a nurse and nurse social work practitioner, Dretona balances her love of having an impact in others’ lives with that of supporting her six children, her three beautiful grandchildren, and her husband of 28 years, Keith L. Maddox.

Juan Hurtado-Rodríguez is the Program Coordinator of the Health Advocates of Alameda Health System, the county health system for Alameda County. His background is as a state certified sexual assault and domestic violence counselor which he uses to bring a trauma informed level of care to his department. In recent years the program has transitioned to a pod-based, co-located model within the outpatient clinics where patients are assessed for non-clinical social need and connected to vital community resources to address whole person care while also helping address throughput on the inpatient floors. His hope is to connect with the vibrantly diverse communities across the state to learn the strategies they have developed and empower them to find additional protective factors.

La Tausha Wade is a Certified Life Coach with over 20 years of providing wraparound service to at risk children and families in Alameda and Contra Costa County. I create interventions that build resilience in the children and families that I serve. I am a survivor. I am an overcomer of early childhood trauma with an ACE score of 6. I made up my mind at age 4 that I would WIN despite the odds against me and then teach others in my community to do the same. I am a miracle. I am a LIFE coach.

Lucy Hernandez is a certified community action professional (CCAP) and a National R.O.M.A. Certified Trainer (NCRT) that has administered multi-million budgets for public and Non-Profit community action agencies in CA for over 22 years. She has developed recognized programs and models in the state and at the national level. As a professional in the human services field, she has administered agencies in rural and urban communities. Lucy’s passion is building community action agencies and their communities through maximizing a collective impact model and supporting local efforts to build awareness, community engagement and leadership development to succeed as one! Lucy Hernandez was most recently announced by the North Bay Business Journal as the 2020 Latina Business Leadership Award Recipient for her dedication to serving the North Bay and Latino communities through innovative community and business services.

Stacy Shwartz Olagundoye, Catalyst Center Program Manager, exemplifies a commitment to community well-being, systems change, and transformative justice for children, youth, and families. She contributes over fifteen years of combined experience in project management, culturally responsive research and evaluation, training and technical assistance, and nonprofit leadership. Stacy specializes in complex, equity-focused, cross-sectional projects in the areas of educational disparities, trauma, health equity, and community and youth development to help leverage collective partnership into community action and change.
